Oral Health Exams for Infants
Regular oral health exams are essential to starting your child’s smile off on the right foot. We recommend bringing them in for their first dental appointment around their first birthday or shortly after their first tooth appears (whichever comes first) so that we can monitor their teething process and make sure that things are going smoothly. Plus, your child will learn to feel comfortable going to the dentist from an early age, which will pay off big time down the road.
Cleanings & Exams
To help keep your child’s smile healthy, we recommend scheduling a cleaning appointment every six months or so. During the appointment, we’ll gently remove the plaque and tartar that build up on their teeth over time (no matter how diligently they brush and floss) and also conduct a thorough oral health exam to make sure things are on the right track. Plus, we’ll teach them how to brush properly and help encourage them to be mindful of their overall dental health.
Fluoride
Fluoride treatments can help prevent cavities by repairing the enamel of your child’s teeth. Over time, tooth enamel gets worn down, whether by brushing, eating, or drinking sodas or other acidic beverages. Regular fluoride treatments (typically when your child comes in for a dental cleaning) can help rebuild tooth enamel, a process called remineralization.
Fillings
If your child has a cavity, we can help! Even if the affected tooth is a baby tooth that will fall out within a few years, we strongly recommend making sure that your child gets a filling to prevent the cavity from growing or the tooth from becoming infected, as that can have a severe impact on your child’s oral health. A filling is a simple, safe, routine procedure during which we’ll clean away any damaged tooth structure and then fill in the cavity with a material like dental composite, gold, or metal amalgam. This will protect the long-term health of the tooth and prevent the cavity from leading to additional damage.
Sealants
Sealants can help protect hard-to-brush areas in your child’s mouth from developing cavities. Made from thin strips of plastic resin that coat the surface of a tooth, sealants form a physical barrier between bacteria and your child’s tooth enamel. They can be reapplied regularly for continued protection.
Pediatric Crowns
If your child has a tooth that becomes damaged or cracked, we can use a crown to fix it up again. A crown is essentially an artificial tooth that sits on top of your child’s existing tooth structure to strengthen, protect, and restore the functionality of the tooth.
